University History
The Ukrainian State Academy of Railway Transport was founded in 1930. The history of the university started on June 12, 1930, when according to the decree of the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR was established Kharkiv Operational and Traction Institute of Railway Engineers. The new Institute started its educational activity with 432 students. In 1932 the School was renamed to Kharkiv University of Transportation. In 1930 it became Kharkov Institute of Railway Engineers. In 1993, the university was accredited by the State Accreditation Committee of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine at the IV level of accreditation with the change in status. The Institute was renamed the Kharkiv State Academy of Railway Transport – to the provision of corresponding rights with respect to autonomy. By the decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated October 30, 2014, as part of the implementation of the new Law of Ukraine “On Higher Education,” the institution was renamed to Ukrainian State University of Railway Transport.
University Today
For 75 years of its existence, the Ukrainian State University of Railway Transport prepared nearly 70,000 specialists for rail transport, road construction, and other industries. Among the graduates of the academy are the Minister of Transport of the USSR M.S.Konaryev, Minister of Transport of Ukraine H.M.Kirpa, head of the Southern Railway, and the Hero of Ukraine V.M.Ostapchuk, leading specialists of transport companies around the world, ministers, deputy ministers of railways chiefs, heads of Railways and large enterprises, famous scientists and statesmen. More than 130 graduates of the Academy have become doctors.
Today Ukrainian State University of Railway Transport – is a modern university of IV-level accreditation with an international reputation in the field of education and research. The university has trained more than 11,500 students, including foreign citizens, who receive Specialist‘s and master’s degrees. The Academy has 35 educational departments with a qualified academic staff in 15 directions and 19 specialties. The structure also includes the Ukrainian State University of Railway Transport and retraining and skills upgrading. Ukrainian State University of Railway Transport has 4 modern academic buildings with all necessary equipment in laboratories, research libraries with 1.5 million printed editions, a library, a computer center, a gymnasium, a medical center, and 5 renovated dormitories.
