The Ukrainian National Forestry University is the only multi-level multifunctional higher education institution in Ukraine of a forestry profile that trains specialists for the forestry and related sectors of the economy of Ukraine and conducts fundamental and applied scientific research on topical sectoral and complex inter-sectoral problems of the socio-ecological and economic development of Ukraine.
History
The development of forestry education and science in Galicia dates back to the second half of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th centuries. In 1807, Galician foresters appealed to the authorities of Vienna with a request to open a secondary forestry school. In 1812, forestry departments and professional studios were established at Lviv University. In June 1852, a forestry section began operating under the Galician Economic Society, and later, in 1874, the Galician Forestry Society.
On October 24, 1874, the Regional School of Forestry in Lviv began training specialists, which led to the establishment of the current National Forestry University of Ukraine.
1908 – The Regional School of Forestry received the status of a higher education institution and was equal in rights to higher educational institutions.
1919 – The Higher Forestry School was merged with the Technical and Agricultural Academies, forming the Agricultural and Forestry Faculty of the Lviv Polytechnic.
1945 – Lviv Forestry Institute was established with three faculties: Forest Engineering, Mechanical Wood Processing, and Engineering and Economics.
1954 – the Forest Reclamation Faculty of the Lviv Agricultural Institute was established, which was attached to the Forestry Faculty of the Lviv Forestry Institute, and the Yaniv Educational and Research Forestry Farm was also transferred to its structure, on the basis of which the Stradchiv Educational and Production Timber Combine was developed.
1993 – the Ukrainian State Forestry University was established on the basis of the Petro Pogrebnyak Lviv Forestry Institute.
2005 – Ukrainian State Forestry University was granted national status and renamed the National Forestry University of Ukraine.
Over the 150 years of its history, the Ukrainian National Forestry University has become a recognized center of forestry science and education, which plays a leading role in shaping the development strategy of the forestry industry of Ukraine, the preservation, protection and rational use of forest resources.
University Today
The activities of the Ukrainian National Forestry University are highly recognized both nationally and internationally. This is evidenced by the university’s strong positions in various ranking systems and academic ratings of higher education institutions, which are used to identify promising directions for the development of higher education and to determine the most successful components of educational institutions’ performance.
According to the international “Ukrainian National H-index Ranking,” which assesses the scientific productivity of scholars, research groups, and organizations in different countries based on a consolidated Hirsch index, UNFU ranks among the top four higher education institutions in the Lviv region.
In the academic ranking of higher education institutions of Ukraine “Top-200 Ukraine,” the consolidated ranking of Ukrainian universities, the Webometrics Ranking of World’s Universities, and according to metrics from the Scopus scientometric database, Ukrainian National Forestry University consistently holds high positions among Ukrainian universities and improves its rankings each year.
UN Ukrainian National Forestry University FU also annually organizes, coordinates, and actively participates in greening projects, including tree planting initiatives as part of the presidential program “Green Country” and other environmental events.
The Ukrainian National Forestry University is a member of several prestigious international organizations in the fields of forestry and environmental protection, including the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO), Silva Network (Academic Network of European Universities), and the European Forest Institute (EFI). The university also collaborates with a number of specialized institutions and networks such as the Council of European Foresters, IFSA (International Association of Student Foresters), the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), the Baltic University Programme, and COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology).
The Botanical Garden of the Ukrainian National Forestry University was established in 1991 as a research, educational, and environmental institution. It holds the status of a nature conservation site of national importance. The Ukrainian National Forestry University Botanical Garden is the only one in Ukraine with a focus on forestry and botanical sciences.
The Ukrainian National Forestry University is located within nine academic and research buildings, one of which is an architectural monument. The dormitories are situated on the university grounds. All academic buildings and dormitories form a unified “University Campus.”
