    Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatiuk National Pedagogical Umiversity is one of the leading centers of higher pedagogical education in Ukraine, educational and cultural center of Ternopil and one of the oldest universities in Western Ukraine. According to the results of Ukrainian higher education institutions consolidated rating the university ranks the second among pedagogical universities.

    History

    In 1620, in the town of Kremenets Brotherhood (Bratska) School was set up to prepare elementary school teachers for other Brotherhood Schools. In 1637, famous enlightener Petro Mohyla reorganized Brotherhood (Bratska) School into Kremenets-Epiphany Collegium to train teachers for Volyn Brotherhood Schools.

    In1805, on the basis of Collegium premises with the Russian Tsar Alexander I Decree a higher educational institution, Volyn Gymnasium of Higher Sciences, was opened. In 1818 Volyn Gymnasium was reorganized into Kremenets-Volyn Lyceum. In 1833 after the defeat of the Polish revolutionary movement Kremenets-Volyn Lyceum was closed. Volyn Theological Seminary was located in the building. In 1902 – Volyn Deocesan (Eparchial) Women’s School to prepare elementary school teachers was established on the basis of Volyn Theological Seminary.

    In 1935 Lyceum of Teacher Seminary was reorganized into Pedagogium. In 1937 Pedagogical Lyceum was opened. In 1939 it comprised 20 educational institutions besides library, several boarding schools and economic facilities. In September, 1944 Krements Institute reopened for students. In 1950 with the Resolution of Council of Ministers of Ukraine of August 4 Krements Teachers Training Institute was reorganized into Pedagogical one. In 1969 Pedagogical Institute moved to Ternopil.

    In 1997, Resolution No.555 of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine “On creation of Ternopil State Pedagogical University” was issued. In 2004, with the Decree of the President of Ukraine No.957/2004 the university was given the status of National educational institution.

    University Today

    Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatiuk National Pedagogical Umiversity brings together about 5500 students and 430 academic staff members. The University awards Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, Higher Qualification Post-graduate degrees and Doctoral degrees. Bachelor and Master’s program students are widely engaged into the work of research centers and labs, since the University pays special attention to immersing students into the chosen field research. This ensures better knowledge and skills acquisition.

    Today the University has bilateral partnership agreements with more then 50 foreign educational and scientific institutions from 11 countries. Thanks to the signed agreements of cooperation with Polish educational institutions, Double Degree Program is implemented at TNPU and provides possibilities for simultaneous studies in Poland and Ukraine. 

    TN Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatiuk National Pedagogical Umiversity pursues partnerships with more than 60 higher education institutions worldwide. The cooperation includes joint research projects, double diploma programs, academic mobility programs, and many more. The growth and strengthening of inter-university relations are facilitated by the membership of TNPU in international structures, namely: Consortium of Ukrainian Universities and Warsaw University (since 2006); Academic Association of Central and Eastern Europe (since 2006); Association of Rectors of European Pedagogical Universities; Associations of signatories of the Charter of the Universities (since 2013); Inter-State Educational and Scientific Platform-Eurasian Academic Forum (since 2016). In 2021, TNPU was honoured with the right to open the first Confucius Institute in Western Ukraine in close cooperation with Shenyang Normal University. We are thoroughly working on the future center which will be a further step in TNPU-China connections.

    Research at Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatiuk National Pedagogical Umiversity covers a very broad spectrum of disciplines with 17 research centers and 28 research labs within the University structure. The research centers are focused on fundamental aspects (majority of the centers represent research in Humanities) which the labs are preoccupied with research and development projects (6 of 28 labs work in Biology and Health Care). The most prominent research fields at TNPU are the following:

    Accommodation

    Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatiuk National Pedagogical University’s student campus is compactly located on the university grounds, right next to the academic buildings. It consists of five block‑style dormitories that house over 2,000 students. Rooms accommodate 2, 3, or 4 students, and students are allowed to request placement with peers from the same course or faculty.

    Rooms are furnished with beds, desks, chairs, and wardrobes. Common kitchens, sanitary facilities, and showers are available on each floor. Quiet study rooms are also provided to support academic work. Additionally, the campus includes sports grounds, a student café, and Wi‑Fi in most dorms and campus buildings. The campus is lively and secure, offering a supportive environment for over 2,000 students with ample academic, cultural, and recreational resources.
