Sumy State University, originally established as a branch of Kharkiv University in 1948 and gaining independent status in 1993, is a highly esteemed educational institution in Ukraine. History of the Medical Institute
In the autumn of 2005, the Medical Institute of Sumy State University was established, building upon the foundation of the existing medical faculty, which included two branches: medical and postgraduate medical education. It marked the commencement of intern training across various specialties such as “Therapy,” “Surgery,” “General practice-family medicine,” “Obstetrics and gynecology,” “Infectious diseases,” and “Pediatrics,” among others. Starting from 2008, regional doctors gained access to advanced training courses offered by the Medical Institute. From 2005 to 2012, the institute was under the leadership of Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Vitaly Eduardovych Markevich. During his tenure, the institute expanded its scope to include training in the field of “Medical and Preventive Affairs,” which commenced in 2012.
Between 2012 and 2017, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Vladislav Anatoliyovych Smyanov served as the head of the Medical Institute. Under his leadership and with the support of university administration, the institute’s infrastructure saw substantial development. Notable advancements include the establishment of a preventive sanatorium in September 2013, later transformed into the University Clinic of Sumy State University in early 2017. The opening of the dental educational and scientific building in September 2015 expanded the institute’s educational offerings. New specialties introduced during this period include “Dentistry” in 2013 and “Physical rehabilitation” (“Physical therapy, occupational therapy”) and “Physical culture and sports” in 2014. Since January 2017, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Andriy Mykolayovych Loboda has served as the director of the institute. Under his leadership, the institute introduced two additional specialties: “Pediatrics” and “Public Health,” with training commencing in September 2017.
