History
Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine holds the distinction of being the country’s oldest institution for postgraduate training of physicians. Its journey began in 1918 as the Clinical Institute of the Kyiv Union of Physicians, evolving through several stages of development and nomenclature changes. Initially established as a demonstration clinical outpatient clinic, it later merged with the Kyiv Institute for Improvement of Pharmacists in 1953. During the period from 1965 to 1991, the institute operated under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health of the USSR. With Ukraine’s independence, it returned to the oversight of the Ministry of Health of sovereign Ukraine in 1991. The university transitioned into an educational and methodological center for postgraduate medical education under the Ministry of Health’s purview.
In 1992, the Shupyk National Healthcare University introduced new modalities for postgraduate training, including pre-certification cycles, full-time and part-time internships for medical practitioners, and programs for training managerial and academic staff. The university received accreditation as the Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education at the IV level in 1996, later being bestowed the name of Platon Lukych Shupyk in 1998. In acknowledgment of its contributions, it was granted national status by the President of Ukraine in 2006. Marking its centenary in 2018, the academy continued to expand its educational endeavors, offering master’s level programs by 2020. In 2021, it underwent another significant transformation, being renamed the National University of Health Care of Ukraine in honor of P. L. Shupyk, as decreed by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine stands as a prominent scientific and medical hub within the country. Boasting a formidable research faculty, the university comprises approximately 800 dedicated members, including 245 individuals holding MDs and Doctor of Science degrees, alongside 455 with MDs and PhDs. Among them are 175 esteemed full professors and over 280 associate professors. The Shupyk National Healthcare University houses 25 established scientific schools, with plans for the formation of four new ones. The university hosts a dynamic Young Scientists Board, fostering the development of emerging talent.
