History of the University
In 1919, efforts commenced to establish an agricultural institute at Prince Kochubey’s estate in Dikanka, yet the plan was shelved due to the estate’s plundering. Consequently, on September 1, 1920, the Poltava Council of Provincial Trade Unions inaugurated an agricultural faculty at the Higher Workers’ School, with divisions in field cultivation, livestock breeding, and horticulture with vegetable gardening. Tasked with training agricultural personnel, the faculty, initially led by Evgeniy Rekalo, found its abode in the edifice of a former theological seminary, enrolling 49 students in its inaugural year.
By October 1921, the faculty morphed into an agricultural technical school, housing agronomic, zootechnical, and horticultural departments. Subsequent years witnessed the assimilation of a cooperative technical school and a horticultural school, evolving into cooperative and agronomic departments. Concurrently, the technical school transitioned into an agricultural cooperative, accommodating new departments like zootechnical and intensive crops by 1927. In December 1927, a further reorganization transfigured the institution into an agricultural polytechnic, boasting agronomic, zootechnical, intensive crops, and cooperative departments.
The polytechnic metamorphosed into an agricultural institute in 1929, absorbing four technical schools: Poltava’s industrial and land management, as well as agricultural ones in Krasnograd and Erastov. Under the purview of the People’s Commissariat of Agriculture of the Ukrainian SSR, the institute sprouted eight faculties by 1930, covering various agricultural domains. Over the years, it underwent several name changes and structural reconfigurations amidst Stalinist repressions and the exigencies of war. Post-war rehabilitation culminated in the institute’s reorganization into the Poltava State Agrarian Academy on July 23, 2001, subsequently joining the European Association of Development Agencies in April 2017. Notably, the educational institution’s elevation to university status in October 2020 heralded a broader scope of specialization beyond agriculture, embodying its enduring legacy in Ukrainian higher education.
