The Odesa National Economic University is one of the leading universities in Ukraine, which has considerable achievements, both in the past and in the present circumstances. The Odesa National Economic University has a great influence on the intellectual, technical, scientific, and economic development of the country, particularly on the personnel potential of the state economic areas.

    History

On May 16, 1921, the Odessa Provincial Executive Committee issued an order establishing the Odessa Institute of National Economy. In the 1922/23 academic year, out of 43 lecturers at the Odessa Institute of National Economy, 11 professors and associate professors had pre-revolutionary experience working in higher education. They developed the fundamental principles of the state’s economic policy and established scientific schools that transformed the institution into a scientific and economic center of Southern Ukraine. Each of them trained a whole generation of specialists, educators, and researchers in the field of economic science.

The early 1930s were a very significant period in the history of the institution. In 1930–1932, the Soviet Union carried out a credit reform, as a result of which commercial credit was replaced by bank credit, and a single banking system was created.

The lack of experience in organizing crediting for the economy and planning monetary circulation, as well as the need to train economists to work in the State Bank system, became the precondition for the reorganization of the Odessa Institute of National Economy in 1931 into the Credit and Economic Institute, subordinated to the Board of the USSR State Bank.

Beginning with the 1945/46 academic year, the process of transforming the Odessa Credit and Economic Institute into a multidisciplinary educational institution began. In addition to training economists in monetary circulation and credit, the institute also started preparing specialists in operational technology and accounting for the State Bank.

On December 2, 1966, the Council of Ministers of the USSR adopted a resolution to reorganize the Odessa Credit and Economic Institute into the Odessa Institute of National Economy.

By a resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated July 13, 1993, the Odessa State Economic University was established on its basis. By Presidential Decree of Ukraine No. 1041/2011 dated November 11, 2011, the university was granted the status of a national university.

A total of nearly 10,000 students, postgraduates, doctoral candidates, and applicants are currently studying at the university and its structural subdivisions, including citizens of Vietnam, Mongolia, China, Israel, Romania, Cyprus, Turkmenistan, Congo, Moldova, and others. Over the years of its existence, the university has trained almost 95,000 specialists who now work across four continents in fifty countries around the world.
