National University “Odesa Maritime Academy” is a higher educational, scientific, and methodological institution located in Odesa. Over the years of Ukraine’s independence, NUMA has established a network of separate structural units, including in the city of Izmail. With each passing year, more and more domestic and foreign shipowners, including representatives from Belgium, Great Britain, Greece, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Japan, and other leading maritime states, prefer Ukrainian sailors and, above all, graduates of the university. National University “Odesa Maritime Academy” has a modern material and technical base, state-of-art maritime simulators, a large library, and a unique training sailing ship “Druzhba.”
The National University “Odesa Maritime Academy” researches the development of international maritime policy, economics, the national maritime education system, maritime safety, navigation, technical fleet operation; integrated intellectual complexes and systems; discover ship repair technology, technical management, global maritime communications, navigation equipment systems and hydrographic support for Ukraine, and a range of others. During the period from 1991 to 2006, the academy completed over 250 scientific developments, defended 17 doctoral and 42 candidate dissertations, published 68 monographs, and obtained 52 copyright certificates and patents.
The National University “Odesa Maritime Academy” publishes periodic collections of scientific works included in the list of recommended specialized publications by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine: “Navigation” and “Shipboard Technical Means Automation”. There is a specialized academic council for awarding academic degrees to Doctors and Candidates of Technical Sciences in the specialties “Operation and Repair of Transport Vehicles”, “Ship Power Plants”, and “Navigation and Ship Control”. The university has created all the conditions for physical education and sports: an Olympic-class swimming pool, a gym, sports sections, and a water station fully available to cadets and students.

Former Names
- June 7, 1944 – the Odesa Higher Maritime School (OHMS) was established.
- On May 29, 1958 – OHMS was renamed to the Odesa Higher Engineering Maritime School (OHEMS).
- On April 26, 1991 – OHEMS was transformed into the Odesa State Maritime Academy (OSMA).
- On September 21, 2002 – OSMA was granted national status and renamed the Odesa National Maritime Academy (ONMA).
- January 1, 2016 – the Odesa National Maritime Academy (ONMA) has been reorganized by transforming it into the National University “Odesa Maritime Academy” (NU “OMA”) following the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine decree dated June 15, 2015, No. 623-r and the Decree of the President of Ukraine dated August 25, 2015, No. 500.
