The National Aviation University traces its origins back to the late XIX century when aviation courses were organized by Kyiv Polytechnic. In 1933, the Kyiv Aviation Institute was established as an independent entity through a resolution of the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR. It marked the beginning of its journey as a prominent educational institution. The university quickly became known for its powerful scientific school, particularly in areas of mechanics, electronics, electrical engineering, materials science, computer science, and engineering. Professor T. Tower, along with academics G. A. Kukhtenko Pukhov, Pen’kov A., B. Malinowski, Professor A. Grokhol’skiy, L. Ilnytskyy, and others, played pivotal roles in establishing this strong foundation.
Throughout its history, the National Aviation University has been led by esteemed individuals such as M. Korolko, V. Podporinov, D. Glinchuk, N. Taranyuk, Gorchakov, P. Podchasov, M. Holeho, Alexander Aksenov, P. Nazarenko, V. Babak, and M. Kulik. Their contributions have significantly shaped the university’s growth and development. In recognition of its national and international standing, the President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma granted the university national status in September 2000. Today, the National Aviation University stands as one of the world’s most powerful aviation higher educational institutions, with a student body of over 50,000, including 1,200 international students from 49 countries.
The National Aviation University’s strong scientific and pedagogical schools offer a wide range of programs, preparing engineers and economists, lawyers, environmentalists, translators, psychologists, sociologists, and others. The faculty is composed of highly qualified individuals, including 15 Academicians and Corresponding Members of NAS of Ukraine, 270 doctors, professors, and 900 candidates of sciences. History
The National Aviation University’s independent journey began in 1933 with the establishment of the Kyiv Aviation Institute by a decree of the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR. Throughout its history, the university underwent several name changes, reflecting its evolving focus and stature. It was known as the Kyiv Institute of Civil Aviation in 1947 and 1965 before being renamed the Kyiv International University of Civil Aviation in 1994. Finally, in 2000, it attained national status and was rebranded as the National Aviation University.
In its more than 70 years of existence, the National Aviation University has played a significant role in preparing over 70,000 highly qualified specialists. The university’s rich history underscores its commitment to excellence in aviation education and research. Today, as the National Aviation University, it stands as a globally recognized institution with a legacy of producing skilled professionals in various fields related to aviation, engineering, and technology.

National Aviation University is an extensive educational institution comprising 11 institutes: Institute of Information and Diagnostic Systems; Aerospace Institute; Institute of Aerospace Control Systems; Institute for Environmental Security; Institute of Economics and Management; Law Institute; Institute of Pre-University Training; Humanities Institute; Institute of ICAO; Institute of Correspondence Education and Distance Learning; Institute of Advanced Technology; Institute of Continuing Education, along with the Institute of International Relations; Institute of Airports, Air Navigation, and Institute of Zhytomyr Military Institute SP Korolev; and Kirovograd Flight Academy. The university encompasses four faculties: Faculty of Computer Science; Faculty of Computer Systems; Faculty for Foreign Students; and Faculty Training Reserve Officers, in addition to seven colleges and three lyceums.
As a member of the International Association of Universities, the National Aviation University offers education in 50 areas spanning Engineering, Technology, Humanities, Social Sciences, Political Sciences, Legal Studies, and more. Annually, it educates over 50,000 students and trainees, contributing to its status as a national and international center for aviation and related industries. Throughout its nearly eighty years of existence, the National Aviation University has produced approximately 200,000 highly skilled specialists from 160 countries.
The National Aviation University boasts robust academic schools in Management, Mechanics, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Computer Science, and Engineering. Scientific research at the university is led by 6 academicians and corresponding members of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 37 academicians from specialized academies, around 300 doctors and professors, and over 800 candidates of sciences and associate professors. With an esteemed faculty, state-of-the-art facilities, and modern information technologies, NAU ensures the effectiveness of its educational programs and fosters the development of future specialists. National Aviation University boasts successful collaborations with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), having established two ICAO European Subregional Training Centres. The centers adhere to the TRAINAIR Methodology based on ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices.
Foreign students who are non-native speakers of the language of instruction have the opportunity to enroll in the Preparatory Faculty, which offers a one-year training program. Upon completion, they have the opportunity to pursue postgraduate programs lasting three years, provided they demonstrate aptitude in their chosen field and research activities. Instruction is conducted in Ukrainian. National Aviation University’s Institute of Continuing Education provides a diverse array of specializations, allowing foreign nationals to enhance their professional knowledge and skills and obtain additional diplomas and certificates.
Accommodation
The student campus at the National Aviation University encompasses 11 hostels, one of which is designed in a hotel style, offering a total living area of 70,504 square meters. The buildings, constructed predominantly of brick, vary in height, with five hostels spanning five stories and six hostels rising to nine stories. Each living space within the hostels is furnished with new furniture, ensuring comfort and convenience for students. Students’ rooms are equipped with modern plumbing fixtures and washing machines, facilitating students’ daily needs.
In addition to comfortable accommodations, the National Aviation University campus provides ample opportunities for physical fitness and recreation. It features two sports grounds where students can engage in various sports activities and maintain an active lifestyle.
