Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University stands as a prominent state higher educational institution in Lutsk, Ukraine, tracing its origins back to its establishment in 1940. Over the years, it has undergone several transformations, evolving from the Lutsk State Teachers’ Institute to the Lutsk State Pedagogical Institute before attaining university status. Throughout its history, it has been known as Volyn State, Volyn National, and East European National University, ultimately returning to its current name in 2020, in honor of the esteemed Ukrainian writer, Lesya Ukrainka.
With its 14 faculties and a dedicated team of over 770 full-time employees, Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University caters to the educational needs of more than 9,000 students and trainees. Its expansive campus encompasses nine educational buildings and five dormitories, providing a conducive environment for learning and growth. The university’s extensive facilities include a well-stocked library housing over 400,000 publications, along with five museums showcasing various aspects of Ukrainian culture and heritage. University’s History
The Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University traces its origins back to 1940 to the establishment of the Lutsk State Teachers’ Institute with an initial enrollment of 135 students and 50 teachers across four departments. Despite facing challenges such as inadequate facilities and equipment, the institute gradually improved its educational and material base with assistance from institutions like the Poltava Pedagogical Institute. Ivan Sokur served as its first director. Resuming activity after the Second World War, the institute evolved into the Lutsk State Pedagogical Institute in 1951, later named after Lesya Ukrainka. Over the years, it expanded to include additional faculties and saw infrastructural developments during the 1970s and 1980s. In 1991, the institute acquired the former building of the regional committee of the CPSU as its main facility.
In 1993, it was reorganized into Volyn State University, retaining the name Lesya Ukrainka. Achieving national status in 2007 under the decree of President Viktor Yushchenko, it was renamed Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University. Subsequent changes in 2012 and 2016 aligned the university’s structure with higher education laws and regulations. In June 2020, the university’s labor team decided to revert to its former name, Volyn State University named after Lesya Ukrainka, which was officially reinstated in August 2020, accompanied by the introduction of a new logo and updated signage on the main building.
