    History of the University

Valerii Pokanevych (1950-2012), a respected figure in the medical community, left an indelible mark on Ukrainian healthcare. As an Honored Doctor of Ukraine, a Candidate of Medical Sciences, and an Associate Professor, he played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of folk and alternative medicine in the country. Serving as the General Director of the Ukrainian Association of Traditional Medicine and the Chief Freelance Specialist of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine in “Folk and Alternative Medicine,” Pokanevych spearheaded efforts to establish a robust human resources system in this field.

His visionary leadership led to the introduction of the “Doctor of Folk and Alternative Medicine” specialty in 1998, subsequently included in the roster of medical positions within healthcare institutions. In 1992, Pokanevych founded Kyiv Medical University, driven by the imperative to integrate the most effective and scientifically validated methods of folk and alternative medicine into the comprehensive treatment of illnesses within the Ukrainian healthcare system. His visionary approach is evident in the university’s ethos today, which blends classical medical principles with elements of folk and alternative medicine—a realization of Pokanevych’s long-held aspirations.
