Kherson National Technical University is one of the leading higher educational institutions of the Southern Region of Ukraine. Since its establishment in 1959, Kherson National Technical University remains the center for training of high-skilled professionals capable to generate innovative ideas and efficiently work in an increasingly diverse environment as well as a testing center for new technologies in engineering and IT sphere; chemical, textile, and food processing industries; transport systems and renewable energy.
History
Kherson National Technical University is a modern and dynamic scientific and educational institution with a rich history dating back to 1959. It was founded in Kherson to meet the demand for qualified professionals for the largest cotton mill in Europe at the time — the Kherson Cotton Plant — which had just begun operations.
In response to a growing need for trained specialists amid large-scale infrastructure projects in the Kherson region, including the construction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Station and major irrigation systems, a Training and Consultation Center of the Kyiv Technological Institute of Light Industry was established in Kherson by the order of the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education dated September 7, 1959. By the order of March 11, 1960, the center was reorganized into the General Technical Faculty — a new type of educational institution offering three-year programs.
To streamline the educational process and strengthen ties between theoretical learning and industrial practice, the Ministry of Education of the Ukrainian SSR issued a decree on March 14, 1961, transferring the Kherson GTF to the Odesa Technological Institute of Food Industry. From September 1, 1961, the training of specialists for the textile industry began in the following areas:
- Machines and apparatus of the textile and light industries
- Automation of production processes
- Mechanical processing technology of fibrous materials
- Chemical processing technology of fibrous materials
By September 1, 1963, the Kherson Branch was operating with its own budget and a separate account at the state bank. In 1973, the branch graduated 500 engineers, with a total of 2,733 specialists trained since its founding. Following resolutions by the Council of Ministers of the USSR and the Ukrainian SSR in 1979, and the Ministry’s order dated December 25, 1979, the Kherson branch was transformed into an independent Industrial Institute.
By the early 1980s, the institute had six faculties and over 4,500 students, with 2,280 enrolled in full-time programs. Strong emphasis was placed on integrating scientific research with industrial application. The institute actively collaborated with enterprises through research and development contracts, as well as technical cooperation agreements.
In 1997, by a decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine (No. 254, dated March 24), the institute was reorganized into the Kherson State Technical University. On November 15, 2004, a Presidential Decree (No. 1403/2004) granted the university national status, recognizing its significant contribution to higher education and scientific advancement in Ukraine. The university successfully passed state certification by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine in 1999. More than two-thirds of its academic programs are accredited at the Level IV — the highest in Ukraine — allowing the university to offer education in 37 licensed specializations. In May 2010, during the Europe Days in Ukraine, the European Information Center was officially opened at the university, further strengthening its international ties and commitment to global integration.
University Today
Kherson National Technical University is a modern educational center that opens its treasury of global and national scientific and cultural knowledge to youth not only from the southern region of Ukraine but from across the country and abroad. In recent years, the university has significantly advanced the computerization of its educational processes. This includes the modernization of its computer equipment, the development of local computer networks, and the implementation of cutting-edge information technologies to enhance teaching and learning.
The potential of the University is provided by the highly qualified and motivated academic faculty and researchers. Digitalization, internalization and enhancing university-community partnership are the primary strategic goals. Recently, more attention has been paid to increasing the role of the University within the framework of local innovation eco-system. Supported by UNIDO in partnership with GEF, there has been set up a GCIP regional accelerator center for innovation, technology, and start-ups.
Kherson National Technical University offers a wide range of academic programs across its four faculties:
- Faculty of Information Technology and Design
- Faculty of Integrated Technologies
- Engineering and Transport Faculty
- Faculty of International Economic Relations, Management and Business
These faculties provide Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degree programs in 27 specialties, ensuring students receive a comprehensive and competitive education aligned with current global standards.
Alongside with being an accelerator for regional industrial development, the University has always been the center of active youth involvement into educational programs and community-oriented activities. Currently, a strong focus has been paid on the issues of the post-war renovation and revival, including special target groups of IDPs and the people demobilized from the Armed Forces. The University is also active in the sphere of culture – art projects, exhibitions, art-laboratories and collaborations are implemented by the faculty and students, co-working space for young people and discussion venues for local communities are provided.
Each year, KhNTU carries out fundamental and applied research in the field of advanced and resource-efficient technologies for energy, industry, and the agro-industrial sector. The key research areas include: development of theoretical and physicochemical foundations for producing chemical agents used in fire-retardant treatments of textile materials; study and optimization of optical and electrical properties of heterocompositions based on zero-dimensional structures, research into mass and heat transfer processes in thin liquid films and liquid transport in microporous materials, development of software-based systems for technological process control during metal reception, creation of optimal control systems for technological facilities, investigation of absorption factors of polymers on cotton fabrics, etc.
To promote physical education and mass sports activities, the university is equipped with a comprehensive sports complex that includes: a large stadium, eight sports courts for mini-football, basketball, and volleyball, indoor sports halls and rooms, a water sports laboratory featuring its own stadium and hangar for equipment storage on the left bank of the Dnipro River, two fully equipped gymnastic zones near the stadium and dormitories.
