    History

The establishment of the Kharkiv Petro Vasylenko National Technical University of Agriculture traces back to its inception as the Kharkiv Institute of Mechanization and Electrification of Agriculture, a pioneering institution in the realm of agricultural engineering education. Founded on July 23, 1930, by Resolution No. 40/237 of the Central Executive Committee and the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR, the university emerged from the mechanization and electrification departments of the Kharkiv and Poltava Agricultural Institutes. During the tumultuous years of World War II, the institute underwent significant upheaval, being evacuated to Tashkent in September 1941 and later re-evacuated to Kharkiv in 1943. Subsequent developments saw the institute subordinated to the Ministry of Higher Education of the USSR in 1946.

Over the ensuing decades, the institute expanded its academic offerings, establishing faculties and departments to meet the evolving needs of the agricultural sector. Notable milestones include the opening of the Faculty of Agricultural Electrification in 1948 the introduction of specialized faculties for mechanical engineering and the training of managerial personnel for Machine-Tractor Stations (MTS) in 1953. Throughout its history, the institute underwent several changes in subordination, eventually coming under the purview of the Ministry of Agriculture of Ukraine in 1991. The university further solidified its international standing through the establishment of the Center for Sociological Studies of Villages, UNESCO Department “Philosophy of Human Communication,” and membership in various global associations.

In recognition of its contributions to agricultural education and research, the institute was reorganized as Kharkiv State Technical University of Agriculture in 2004, named after the eminent scientist Petro Vasylenko. Subsequently, it attained national status under the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine. Further restructuring in 2015 saw the university placed under the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, affirming its commitment to academic excellence and innovation in agricultural engineering education.
