Kamianets-Podilskyi Ivan Ohiienko National University traces its roots to the Kamianets-Podilskyi State Ukrainian University established on August 17, 1918, by Hetman Pavlo Skoropadsky. Ivan Ohiienko, a prominent linguist and key figure in Ukrainian state-building, served as its first Rector. Led by Rector Sergiy A. Kopylov, the university holds the IVth level of accreditation. With a history of training over 90,000 specialists and producing 350 doctors and candidates in sciences, it has garnered numerous national and international accolades.
The Kamianets-Podilskyi Ivan Ohiienko National University offers 46 Bachelor’s and 40 Master’s programs across 9 faculties and 40 departments, training 6058 specialists in various modes of study. With 407 scientific and pedagogical staff, including 292 Ph.D. holders and 40 Professors, it provides postgraduate and doctoral programs in 13 and 3 specialties, respectively. Spanning 12 buildings covering 128,327.3 square meters, the campus includes 6 dormitories, 2 stadiums, and a sports camp. While instruction is primarily in Ukrainian, specialized disciplines at the Faculty of Foreign Philology and language courses (English, German, French) are offered for professional development.
History of the University
Kamianets-Podіlskyi Ivan Ohiienko National University stands as an educational, scientific, and cultural hub in Khmelnytskyi oblast. Established on October 22, 1918, as Kamianets-Podilskyi State Ukrainian University, under the law signed by Hetman Pavlo Skoropadskyi during the Ukrainian People’s Republic era; its foundation was proposed by prominent figures including O. Pashchenko, O. Shulminskyi, and K. Solukha. The first rector, I. Ohiienko led the university; notable founders included V. Bidnov, D. Doroshenko, and M. Hrushevskyi. Throughout its history, it evolved through several reorganizations, including becoming the Institute of Social Education in 1930.
Despite challenges such as repression during the Soviet era, the Kamianets-Podіlskyi Ivan Ohiienko National University persisted. In 1997, Kamianets-Podilskyi Pedagogical University emerged from its Pedagogical Institute roots. By the Cabinet of Ministers’ Order in 2008, it was officially named Kamianets-Podіlskyi Ivan Ohiienko National University. During its early years, the university played a crucial role in Ukrainian state-building, providing education for local authorities, soldiers, teachers, and clergy. It contributed significantly to Ukrainian literature, translating religious texts and creating dictionaries. Despite the tumultuous periods, the university continued to uphold its academic standards and contribute to the intellectual life of Ukraine.
