Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas is a powerful and extensive educational and scientific-industrial complex, the main Carpathian regional educational organization of students and teachers. It carried out undergraduate and postgraduate educational activities and held technical high school and college educational activities.

    History

The history of Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas dates back to 1960, when the Stanislav General Technical Faculty of Lviv Polytechnic Institute was established. The faculty boasted well-equipped laboratories for chemistry, physics, metal technology, material strength, general heat engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanics.

In 1963, the faculty was reorganized into the Ivano-Frankivsk Branch of Lviv Polytechnic Institute, with departments for the oil and gas industry and general engineering. Later, the petroleum faculty was also relocated here. Between 1963–1964, the university saw the emergence of new faculties, including the Mechanical Faculty (1963) and the Faculty of Automation and Economics (1966–1967). The institution developed rapidly. Postgraduate studies were launched in 1968. During the 1970s, the university expanded with the creation of a history museum, computing center, and educational-methodical department. The years 1978–1979 marked a period of active construction of academic buildings, a scientific and technical library, and a sports complex.

The core unit of the university was the Oil and Gas Industrial Faculty, from which the Mechanical, Geological Exploration, and Automation and Economics faculties were later derived. Additional faculties in Pipeline Engineering, Automation, and Electrification were also opened. In the 1971–1972 academic year, an Evening Faculty was established (functioning until 1993). In 1981, the university founded the Special Design and Technology Bureau “Nadra”, which specialized in oil and gas field development and played a key role in intensifying research and implementing scientific achievements in industry.

With Ukraine’s independence came significant reforms in higher education. In 1993, the university underwent state accreditation by the Intersectoral Accreditation Commission (IAC), which recognized the academic strength and reputation of IFNTUOG. The institute was accredited at the highest (IV) level. By Cabinet of Ministers Decree No. 244, dated April 20, 1994, the Ivano-Frankivsk State Technical University of Oil and Gas was established on the basis of the institute.

In May 1996, the Oil and Gas Technology Park was created at the university. At that time, 47 international students were enrolled, with the first cohort graduating in 1997.

In 2001, a Presidential Decree granted the university national status. From 2001 to 2009, the university undertook extensive reforms in line with the Bologna Declaration, aligning with European standards in higher education. This new status ushered in a period of dynamic development across all areas of training for professionals in Ukraine’s oil and gas sector.

International cooperation plays a vital role in the university’s academic and scientific life. Before the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the university hosted students from 32 countries. IFNTUOG students now have the opportunity to study at institutions like the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków (Poland), where they can earn European-standard Master’s degrees, and to complete internships and placements in Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Canada, Turkey, Greece, and other countries.

The university has successfully implemented international research projects under various programs, including the 7th EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, and Hungary–Slovakia–Romania–Ukraine Cross-Border Cooperation. IFNTUOG is actively integrating into the European research community.
