History of the University
The Lviv National Academy of Music named after M.V. Lysenko has a rich history rooted in the 19th century. It traces its origins to the establishment of the Saint Cecilia Society, founded by Franz Xaver Mozart, in Lviv. The society later evolved into the Society for Teaching of Music in Galicia, eventually becoming the Galician Music Society in 1848. In 1854, the society opened its Music Conservatory, with Karol Mikuli, a pupil of Chopin, serving as its first director. Over the years, the conservatory attracted renowned musicians to its faculty and produced some of the most notable musicians of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
In 1903, the Ukrainian minority in Lviv founded a separate Higher Musical Institute of Mykola Lysenko, operated alongside the Galician Music Society’s conservatory. Both institutions thrived until 1939 when they were merged into the Lviv State Conservatory, M.V. Lysenko, following the Soviet invasion of Poland. The conservatory continued to exist after World War II, undergoing several name changes, and was eventually granted national status by Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko in 2007. Today, the Lviv National Academy of Music named after M.V. Lysenko continues to uphold its esteemed legacy, offering a comprehensive education in music and fostering the talents of aspiring musicians under the guidance of accomplished faculty members.
International Department
The International Department of the Lviv National Music Academy named after M.V. Lysenko has welcomed students from various countries, including the USA, Greece, Slovakia, Poland, and the former Yugoslavia. They came to study under international agreements, national programs, and other obligations facilitated by the Ministry of Culture or Education of the USSR and Ukrainian SSR. Notably, many of the foreign students of Ukrainian descent were referred by officially registered Ukrainian national cultural societies.
In 2000, the Lviv National Music Academy established a department dedicated to serving foreign students. Led by the distinguished People’s Artist of Ukraine and T. Shevchenko National Award laureate, Professor Bohdan-Yuriy Yanivskyi, its mission was to ensure the smooth organization of reception and education for foreign citizens, including passport and visa assistance. The desire of Ukraine to integrate into Europe and the need for uniform educational standards prompted higher education reforms. In 2006, Ukraine formed the National Team of Bologna Promoters, aiming to converge higher education with European standards.
The Lviv National Music Academy maintains dynamic relations with educational institutions worldwide, engaging in international programs and collaborations with organizations such as Erasmus+, DAAD, the Humboldt Foundation, Fulbright, and others. The International Department plays a pivotal role in managing the affairs of foreign students, with a dedicated team led by Ostap Maichyk, who serves as the vice-rector overseeing scientific, pedagogical, creative work, and international relations. With over ninety foreign students enrolled as of 2023, the department continues to facilitate their educational journey, supported by partnerships with preparatory departments at Ivan Franko National University and Lviv Polytechnic National University.
