    Kherson State Maritime Academy is a higher educational institution in Kherson with the IV accreditation level. Kherson State Maritime Academy trains professionals of the full range of seagoing, ship building and maritime working specialties.

    History

    In 1834 the School of Merchant Shipping was established by the emperor Nikolay I order. On its way school repeatedly reorganized and acquired the status in accordance with the educational policy of the government.

    In 1834 – School of Merchant Shipping.

    In 1872 – marine classes of 2nd rate headed by the committee of 5-persons elected by the City Council.

    In 1875, respectively – Nautical School, which trained navigators only for coastal voyages.

    In 1880 it was a three-class educational establishment:

    • A class of coastal navigation for masters;
    • For skippers of coastal navigation and pilotage;
    • For seagoing captains.

    In 1920 the educational establishment was reorganized into evening Technical School of Water Transport. In 1930 it was Kherson Maritime Technical School that trained field personnel for merchant marine. Women were also admitted to this faculty. In 1944 a maritime educational establishment resumes its work as a maritime boarding school for preparing navigators, marine and shiprepairing engineers with cadets’ complete social security. In 1996 Seafaring School was reorganized into Kherson Marine College with accreditation level II.

    A higher educational establishment “Kherson State Maritime Institute” was formed on the basis of a current marine college and private maritime institute on the announcement of the Decree of the Cabinet council of Ukraine (number 414-р, 13.06.2007) and the Order of the Ministry of education and science of Ukraine (number 500, 16.06.2007). On the 15th of June 2011 the government issued a Decree «On establishing Kherson State Maritime Academy».

    University Today

    The high knowledge level of cadets of the Academy and its structural subdivisions is reached due to laborious work of more than 400 academic professionals and lecturers: doctors and candidates of sciences, professors, associate professors, acting maritime professionals – masters, chief officers, chief engineers, electrical engineers etc.

    The educational and laboratory facilities of Kherson State Maritime Academy meet all national and international requirements for training of maritime professionals, and some of the simulators available at Kherson State Maritime Academy have no equivalents in Europe. The facilities of Kherson State Maritime Academy are constantly upgraded, and its educational and training complex –supplemented with new laboratories.

    The complex of Kherson State Maritime Academy consists of 19 laboratories, 16 simulators and 21 classrooms, the pearls of which are: Navigation Bridge Integrated Simulator, which consists of Electronic Chart Display and Information System Laboratory, Radar/ARPA Simulator Laboratory and Full Mission Navigation Bridge Laboratory; Engine Room Integrated Simulator, which consists of two engine rooms, Instructor’s Workplace and Theoretical Training Classroom; DP Integrated Simulator, which consists of Full Mission Navigation Bridge of Dynamic Positioning, Theoretical Training Classroom and Classroom with Separate DP Stations; GMDSS Simulator, which consists of two separate classrooms for practical training; Survival and Fire Fighting Centre; Cargo Operations Laboratory; Fire Fighting Ground; Mooring Station; Ship Power Plants Laboratory; Medical Care on Board Ship Laboratory; High Voltage Equipment Laboratory; Electrical Engineering and Automatic Electric Drive Laboratory; Information Technology Laboratory; Water Station; Group Life Saving Appliances Laboratory. These and many other facilities, simulators, laboratories and specialized classrooms ensure high training level of cadets of Kherson State Maritime Academy and allow them to establish their firm position at national and international labour markets.

    On the day of inauguration to cadets of KSMA – October 14, 2017 – there were opened Mooring Station and the open air gym with rubber carpet and 19 pieces of outdoor fitness equipment, on which 33 cadets can train at a time. The opening took place with participation of Chairman of Marlow Navigation Hermann Eden, heads of the region and enterprises, as well as public figures. On December 14, 2017 the solemn opening of the Rigging Workshop, Engine Room Shop and Laboratory for Lecturers in Teaching Methodology of Innovation Technology Implementation in Seafarers’ Professional Training took place.

    Mooring Station is the unique simulator designed for theoretical training in mooring gears and development of skills in ship’s mooring with/without tugs under different winds, tides and streams. Mooring Station comprises equipped laboratory “Rigging Workshop” for carrying out practical rigging works and theoretical classes on structure and functions of different ship’s rigging. The workshop is equipped with 10 lathes containing vises and necessary tools.

    The educational establishment consists of 3 structural subdivisions: Professional Maritime Lyceum where professionals in working specialties at the educational level of Skilled Worker are trained. Maritime College at Kherson State Maritime Academy provides training of Junior Specialists in seagoing and shipbuilding specialties. Professionals in maritime specialties at degrees of Bachelor and Master are trained at the Academy. After finishing, graduates of the Lyceum and College are able to continue training at other structural subdivisions of Kherson State Maritime Academy.

    Training of foreign citizens is carried out according to the Higher Education Degree (Bachelor or Master), specialization: 

    • Navigation and Ship Handling at Sea
    • Ship Technical Systems and Complexes Operation.

    Accommodation

    Kherson State Maritime Academy offers comfortable hostel accommodations for its cadets and students. The hostel is conveniently located within walking distance of the academic buildings, ensuring easy access to classes and university facilities.

    The hostel is designed to provide a safe and supportive environment conducive to both study and rest. Students are accommodated in fully furnished rooms equipped with all essential furniture including beds, desks, chairs, wardrobes, and storage units. Each room is designed to house 2 to 3 students, promoting a comfortable and collaborative living experience.

    Each floor is equipped with shared kitchens furnished with electric stoves, sinks, and tables, allowing students to prepare their own meals. Sanitary units and showers are also available on every floor and maintained regularly to ensure hygiene and cleanliness.

    The hostel offers 24/7 security and controlled access to ensure student safety, high-speed internet access in all rooms and common areas, laundry facilities equipped with modern washing machines, recreation and leisure areas for socializing and relaxation, study rooms and quiet zones for academic work and preparation.
