    The Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts is a state institution of higher education in the field of Art (Design), subordinate to the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine and located in Kharkiv. The activities of the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts are associated with the names of outstanding Ukrainian artists and designers who were graduates or worked at the Academy during the last 10 years. All of them made a significant contribution to the treasury of national fine art and project culture, for which they were awarded the highest state honors and gained the recognition of the cultural and creative public of Ukraine.

    History

    The Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts is a higher art education institution with a 100-year history. It is closely associated with the lives and careers of a whole generation of bright creative personalities and prominent artists, renowned both in Ukraine and abroad.

    In 1768, so-called “additional” classes were opened at the Kharkiv Collegium, including a drawing class. At the beginning of the 19th century, the baton of art education passed to Kharkiv University, which was established in 1805. In 1869, a private art school founded by M. Raevska-Ivanova opened in Kharkiv as a separate educational institution. Starting in 1896, Raevska-Ivanova’s school was transformed into a municipal art school where graduates of the Academy taught, including M. Pestrikov, M. Fedorov, and K. Pineev. In 1912, a long-awaited event took place: the opening of an art college in Kharkiv, subordinate to the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts.

    During World War II, the institute was evacuated to Samarkand. In 1963, the Kharkiv State Art Institute was reorganized into the Kharkiv Art and Industrial Institute, reoriented toward training industrial artists in two specialties. Today, the Academy offers around 30 educational and professional programs. In 1989, a postgraduate program was launched at the institute, and since 2002, a specialized academic council for PhD thesis defense has been operating. In 1992, an art lyceum with a two-year study term opened at the institute. Entrance preparatory courses and a faculty for advanced training of designers were also established.

    In August 2001, according to Directive No. 364-r of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, the Kharkiv Art and Industrial Institute was reorganized into the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts (KSADA), receiving the highest (IV) level of accreditation.

    University Today

    The Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts is the only higher education institution in Ukraine that trains professionals in industrial product design, graphic design, interior design, decorative textiles, clothing design, commercial and industrial advertising, corporate branding, and packaging design.

    Nearly 1,350 students study at the Academy across four faculties, including international students from 12 countries. The Academy hosts students from various countries around the world, including Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Congo, Morocco, Tajikistan, Turkey, and Ecuador. The majority of international students come from China.

    Educational, methodological, scientific, and creative work is conducted by almost 100 faculty members across 17 departments. Among them are 15 professors and 54 associate professors. Twenty-one faculty members hold honorary titles, two are full academicians, and four are corresponding members of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine. Nearly half of the instructors are members of the National Union of Artists and the Union of Designers of Ukraine.

    The Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts is a Member of the European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA) and a Member of the International Association of Leading European Universities of Art, Design and Media (Cumulus Association). It has creative, educational, and scientific ties with higher education institutions in Poland, Sweden, Finland, Italy, Latvia, Turkey, Estonia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Germany, and Hungary.

    The Academy has three educational and laboratory buildings, more than 20 laboratories and educational workshops, a computer technology center, a library, the fund of which includes more than 140,000 items of literature, a museum, a student theater Publicist, a student fashion theater, a dormitory, and more. The Academy has created preparatory courses and a children’s studio of fine arts and design. In recent years, the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts has received diplomas and certificates of honor from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, as well as awards from the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine, the Kharkiv Regional State Administration, etc., in particular, the Diploma of the Laureate of the rating of higher education institutions of Ukraine Sofia Kyivska; the Gold Medal of the Academy of Arts of Ukraine for significant creative achievements; Certificate of Honor of the Kharkiv Regional State Administration for conscientious work, significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian design and art, training of highly qualified specialists; Diploma of the Public Action Flagships of Education and Science of Ukraine for a significant contribution to the development of the image of education and science of Ukraine; Diploma Leader of the national rating system of higher educational institutions of Ukraine, and many other awards.

    Accommodation

    The dormitory of Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts is a 5-storey building with a block-type layout. Each floor of the dormitory is equipped with kitchen areas featuring gas stoves, with a safety agreement in place to ensure proper and secure use of the gas equipment. The living blocks include sanitary facilities, and the dormitory provides separate shower rooms for male and female students.

    Living rooms are fully furnished with beds, wardrobes, and essential bedding. Internet access is available in all rooms. In addition to basic amenities, the dormitory offers a safe and comfortable environment for students, with regular maintenance and cleaning. There may also be access to laundry facilities, common lounges for socializing and study, and a secure entrance system to ensure student safety.
