History
The history of the Lviv Medical University dates back to 1661, when, on January 20, the privilege of King Jan Kazimierz, the Lviv Jesuit College was elevated to the rank of the Academy with the awarding of the University title consisting of four faculties. However, a full-fledged medical faculty until the closure of the University in 1773 was never formed.
November 16, 1784, according to the privilege of Emperor Joseph II of October 21, 1784, there was a restoration in Lviv of the University with four faculties: theology, law, philosophy and medicine. It is on this day that the age of the Lviv National Medical University named after Danylo Halytsky is being counted.
During the years 1891-1898 new academic buildings and clinical bases of the University were built and started functioning: anatomo-physiological, pathoanatomical, chemical, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, internal diseases, dermatovenereology, otorhinolaryngology and others. In March 1900, the first issue of doctors in the number of 16 people was held, among them there were two Ukrainians – I. Polokhailo and Y. Grushkevich. After 100 years – in June 2001 – the university diplomas were awarded to 775 doctors, pharmacists and nurses.
From 1920 to 1925, the Ukrainian Secret University worked in Lviv, which arose due to the negative attitude of the Polish authorities towards the teaching of Ukrainians at Lviv University. Since 1921, the Ukrainian Secret University has organized a medical faculty, which consisted of 10 departments, which included 185 students. Among the teachers were M. Punchyshyn, M. Muzika, I. Kurovets, S. Bali, O. Barvinsky and others. Due to the lack of appropriate laboratory and clinical basis, students of the third and subsequent courses continued their studies in Prague, Vienna, and other universities abroad.
In 1939, after the entry of the West Ukrainian lands into the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, the medical faculty of Lviv University was separated from the university and reorganized into the Lviv State Medical Institute with two faculties: medical and preventive and pharmaceutical.
Since the beginning of the German occupation of Lviv, the activities of higher educational institutions have ceased. A week after the Nazi troops entered Lviv, in July 1941, the Nazis shot 36 professors of Lviv higher education institutions, including 13 professors from the medical institute: T. Ostrovsky, V. Dobhanetsky, S. Progulsky, I. Grek, R. Rentsky, A. Solovei, V. Seradsky, S. Manchevsky, V. Novitsky, A. Tseshinsky, Y. Gedzel’skii, G. Gilyarovich, S. Ruf. This action was just one of the episodes carefully planned by the Nazis in a large-scale campaign of total extermination of Polish science and culture as the elite of the nation. During the occupation, professors A.Lastovetsky, B.Yalovy, A. Bek were tragically killed.
On May 20, 1942, medical professional courses were created by the order of the German occupational administration on the basis of the Lviv Medical Institute. Their curricula were fundamentally different from prewar and were practically identical to the German programs of higher medical education. Somewhat later, the above-mentioned educational institution received the official name of the State medical-preventive professional courses. His organization and activity became possible thanks to the selfless sacrificial work of the People’s Professor M. Panchishin and Dr. R. Osinchuk. On October 1, 1944, two months after the liberation of Lviv from the German occupation, a new academic year began in the Lviv State Medical Institute.
Since 1961, along with the preparation of national staff, the University carries out training of foreign citizens from countries of Europe, Asia, Africa and America. Over 40 years, about 2000 doctors and pharmacists have trained foreigners who work successfully in many countries around the world. Since 1997, the teaching of foreign students in English has been started and dynamically developed.
On October 17, 1996, by the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 1262, the Lviv State Medical Institute received the status of a higher educational institution of the IV level of accreditation and was renamed the Lviv State Medical University.
On October 21, 1998, the University was named after Danylo Halytsky, the first king of the Galician-Volyn state. Danylo Galitsky pursued progressive government and administrative reforms, developed education and culture, improved the army and created for him the first school of medical doctors that started the development of medicine in Galicia.
On August 21, 2003, according to the decree of the President of Ukraine No. 872/2003, Danylo Halytsky Lviv State Medical University, given the national and international recognition of the consequences of its activities, a significant contribution to the development of national education and science, was granted the status of the National Medical University.
