    Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University (ZSMPhU) provides higher medical education for Bachelor’s, and Master’s degrees, as well as postgraduate training in internship, mastership, postgraduate study, residency, and refresher courses for physicians and pharmacists. With 13679 students, including over 3200 foreign students from 42 countries, ZSMPhU is a global institution. 1024 students study in English. The university has a long history of educating international students, with 10500 graduates now working in over 100 countries worldwide, holding prominent positions in public health systems. 

    The Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University is in the top three public medical schools in Ukraine: as of January 1, 2025, the University operates 672 teachers, including 122 doctors and professors and 438 associate professors and candidates of science. Faculty members include scientists Academician of NAS of Ukraine, 46 members of international academies and international scientific societies, eight Honored Scientists of Ukraine, the six winners of prizes Sciences of Ukraine, laureate of the President of Ukraine, two Laureates of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, four Honoured Doctor of Ukraine, two scholars Cabinet for young scientists.

    History

    The origins of Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University trace back to the establishment of Women Pedagogic Courses in Odesa in 1903. Subsequently, in 1921, it evolved into the Chemical-Pharmaceutical Institute, which underwent further reformation into 1935, becoming the State Pharmaceutical Institute. The institute’s progress was interrupted by the Great Patriotic War from 1941 to 1944. In 1959, the university relocated from Odesa to Zaporizhzhia and was renamed the Zaporizhzhia Pharmaceutical Institute. The addition of a Medical Faculty in 1964 prompted another name change to Zaporizhzhia Medical Institute in 1968. Achieving Institute of the first category status in 1975, it finally attained its current designation as Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University of the IV level of accreditation in 1994.

    University Today

    Currently, Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University comprises four academic buildings, 20 clinics, and five student hostels accommodating 2900 students. The campus features two canteens, a cafe, and a library boasting a collection of over 580,000 books, along with a concert hall. The state-of-the-art sports complex offers three gyms, a stadium, and various sports grounds for activities like football, volleyball, and basketball. Situated on 12 hectares of parkland along the picturesque banks of the Dnieper River, the campus provides a serene and comfortable environment. The Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University operates its preventive treatment dispensary and a sport-health resort on the shores of the Azov Sea. With approximately 70 professors and doctors of science, alongside around 300 assistant professors and candidates of science, the university boasts a distinguished faculty, many of whom are esteemed academicians and recipients of prestigious awards.

    The Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University boasts renowned scientific schools with recognition beyond Ukraine, such as the Cardiology School led by Academician Visir A.D., the Pharmaceutical School headed by Professor Mazur I.A., and the Surgery School under the guidance of Professor Nikonenko A.S. Pioneering achievements include the University’s specialists performing Ukraine’s first heart, liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantations, totaling over 500 successful operations. The university’s scientists are adept in modern medical techniques practiced worldwide.

    The University houses its medical diagnosis center and prioritizes integrating computer technologies into its educational, research, and management processes. With 20 computer classrooms offering multimedia-based educational programs and test-controlling courses, the University ensures a technologically advanced learning environment. The institution possesses state-of-the-art equipment for fundamental and applied scientific research, including computer tomographs, ultrasonic diagnosis devices, and angiographic equipment, among others. Its material and technical resources rank among the best in Ukrainian medical universities.

    Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University is renowned for its scientific research in the fields of cardiology, surgery, and pharmacy, etc. The university’s specialists have pioneered heart transplantations in Ukraine and conducted over 500 organ transplants. Over 20 pharmaceutical preparations have been developed and implemented globally. The university regularly participates in international scientific conferences in Sweden, Spain, Brazil, Austria and many other countries

    The Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University’s scientists have developed over 30 medications that have been successfully applied in medical practice and industry. The University has also established an analytical information system for medical-ecological monitoring, a pioneering initiative in Ukraine. The outcomes of its scientific endeavors have been presented at various international forums across Europe and the Americas. The University publishes several scientific journals, including the “Zaporizhzhia Medical Journal,” the “Actual Problems of Medical and Pharmaceutical Science,” and the “Pathology” scientific-practical journal.
