University Clinic of the Bogomolets National Medical University

On 26 October 2020, at a meeting of the Academic Council of the Bogomolets National Medical University, a new structural unit, the University Clinic, was created by merging the Republican Clinical Hospital of the Ministry of Health into the NMU structure.

The University Clinic provides consulting, diagnostic and inpatient medical care to the public. The inpatient department of the clinic consists of multidisciplinary and multifunctional departments (11 departments), which have all the facilities necessary for diagnosis, treatment and round-the-clock patient monitoring. The clinic provides emergency care to patients from the Shevchenkivskyi and Podilskyi districts of Kyiv according to their medical profiles: “General therapy (except for pneumonia)” and “Acute neurological conditions (except for acute cerebrovascular accidents)” and helps the city overcome the bed shortage crisis.

The revival of modern university medicine in Ukraine by establishing the University Clinic of the Bogomolets National Medical University in 2020 encompasses not only the movement towards the most advanced and breakthrough technologies in the global healthcare system. It is also a revival of the traditions of the Kyiv medical school represented by specialists who share some of the health care culture of the early twentieth century.

The development of technologies, human resources and scientific and practical base has made the University Clinic of the Bogomolets National Medical University a multidisciplinary medical institution of the state level, where the three components of a medical university – education, science and clinical practice – are integrated in order to preserve public health.

Today, the University Clinic is home to 12 departments and is expanding its medical capacities, which will significantly upgrade the level of medical care that students will actively be engaged in during their studies.

The University Clinic consists of the following departments: Department of Therapeutic Diseases, Neurology Department, Department of Surgical Diseases, Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory, Department of Radiation, Ultrasound and Functional Diagnostics, Department of Endoscopic Diagnostics and Surgery, Pathology Department with Morphological Laboratory, and Consultative and Diagnostic Polyclinic.

The Department of Therapeutic Diseases has: 30 therapeutic beds, 25 gastroenterology beds, 40 cardiology beds and 5 endocrinology beds.

The Surgical Department consists of 25 surgical and 20 gynaecological beds.

The neurological department has 40 neurological beds and 10 beds for post-stroke rehabilitation.

The University Clinic has a consultative and diagnostic polyclinic where doctors of the following specialities can see patients: surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, therapy, neurology, cardiology, gastroenterology, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, dermatovenereology, phthisiology, infectious diseases, psychiatry, psychophysiology, narcology, oncology, urology, proctology, orthopedics and traumatology, radiology, functional diagnostics, ultrasound diagnostics, reflexology, and therapeutic dentistry.

The Department of Endoscopic Diagnostics and Surgery at the University Clinic of the Bogomolets National Medical University has been working since January 2021. During this period, the diagnostics of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract was implemented, specifically, an endoscopic examination room was equipped with a video endoscopic stand OLYMPUSEXERA II. It is possible to perform primary (sometimes screening) endoscopic diagnostics of gastrointestinal diseases with sampling of material for pathological examination performed by the Clinic’s specialists. If the malignant nature of the neoplasm is confirmed, a set of additional examinations is planned, which is followed by an oncological consultation. It is the specialised oncological consultation that determines the further treatment tactics for the patient. The Clinic provides both the main stage – surgical treatment – and further chemotherapy, if necessary. To provide a more comfortable and safe chemotherapy, the doctors of our Clinic can implant a port system in the patient.

An electrosurgical unit BOWAARC400 was purchased and put into operation, and 206 minimally invasive endoscopic interventions (polypectomies, EMR, bleeding control) were successfully performed.

The Surgical Department is teamed up with other departments, which has expanded the range of both surgical interventions and patient assistance. Oncological, ophthalmological, ENT and vascular surgeries were added to general surgical, plastic, traumatological, gynaecological and proctological surgeries.

For the first time, the following surgical interventions were performed: laparoscopic bowel resection, endoscopic retrograde papillosphincterotomy with lithotexture, simultaneous endoscopic polypectomy and rectal surgery. Rhinoseptoplasty, phacoemulsification of cataracts with IOL implantation, pangysterectomies with lymphadenectomy for cancer are performed.

Since March 2021, the CDL has been focused on 24/7 operation and shifts to provide services.

Endoscopic surgery and the so-called same-day surgery for patients with ophthalmological, otolaryngological, maxillofacial pathology are being integrated into daily practice; anaesthetic care is being improved with state-of-the-art anaesthetic equipment, and diagnostic techniques that offer advantages over other clinics are being introduced: ergospirometry (cardiopulmonary test) and esophageal pacing (therapeutic for atrial flutter, diagnostic for sinus node dysfunction and AV conduction, and latent pre-excitation syndrome).
