    Dnipro State Medical Academy (DSMA) is a Center of Education, Science and Culture located in one of the biggest cities of Ukraine – Dnipro. The city is known as the business center of Ukraine. It is highly developed and well-established in all aspects of life. Dnipro State Medical Academy) is one of the oldest higher educational institutions in Ukraine having 4th (the highest) level of accreditation in Ukraine. It was founded on September 15, 1916, on the basis of Ekaterinoslav Higher Female Courses Institute. The university acquired the status of State Academy in 1920 and was renamed to Dnipro State Medical Academy in 1994 by the order of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine № 224 dated 20 April 1994.

In total, the Dnipro State Medical Academy employs over 1100 staff members.

    History

    The foundation and the establishment of the Dnipropetrovsk State Medical Academy were led by eminent scientists with world-known names. Since its founding, the university’s rectors were: V.P. Karpov (1920-1925), A.A.Levin-Lavretzky (1925-1928), S.S. Kagan (1928-1932), L.A. Gabino (1932 — 1936), M. Trostanetsky (1936-1947), I.M. Kucheriavyj (1947-1953), D.P. Chuhrienko (1953-1959), M. Ya. Horoshmanenko (1959-1964), I.I. Kryzhanovskaya (1964-1981), L.V.Novitskaya-Usenko (1981-1996). Since 1996, the Dnipro State Medical Academy has been headed by an academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Professor G.V. Dzyak.

    In 1922 the Dnipro State Medical Academy organized and edited two scientific medical journals: “Ekaterynoslav Medical Journal” and “New Surgical Archive”. At the university, a single scientific society that was theoretical, surgical, therapeutic, orthopedic, trauma, and pediatric sections. In the academic year 1923/1924, Dnipro State Medical Academy introduced scholarships to students and a place in the hostels to live. In the prewar years, the Dnipro State Medical Academy opened 2 new departments – the Hygienic Department in 1931 and the Pediatrics Department in 1937. By 1941, Dnipro State Medical Academy had prepared: 21 professors, 82 associate professors, 248 assistants, and 6448 physicians. At that time, Dnipro State Medical Academy had 3276 students and 319 staff members. Clinics of the Academy had 2,200 beds.

    Since the beginning of World War II, 130 members of staff of the Dnipro State Medical Academy went to fight from their country at the front. On the basis of the regional hospital was established front-line evacuation hospital (EVP number 3582), chief of which was I.M. Kucheryavyi, Vice – S.A. Rossin, a leading surgeon – D.A. Vasilenko. The hospital retained the valuable property of the Dnipro State Medical Academy. August 13, 1941, the university was evacuated to Stavropol, where Dnipro State Medical Academy was temporarily merged with the Stavropol Medical Institute. The main tasks of the team were to ensure the early release of doctors and retraining of doctors in specialties needed for front and rear. In July 1942 the Institute of Stavropol was evacuated first to Makhachkala, then to Tashkent and Fergana. In the time of World War II (1941-1944), the university trained over 1000 physicians.

    In April 1944 – after the freedom from the Germans staff members of Dnipro State Medical Academy returned back to their property. World War II was a big loss to the university. The most of equipment was stolen, and the main buildings were burned. Despite the difficulties of reconstruction began with the first days of the liberation of the city from invaders., Prof. EA Kuraev, and T. M. Stepanov, Assistant professors V.F. Stefanovskaya and D.N. Kutsygin with their staff have taken the first steps to restore the Academy. In September 1944 the first and second courses enrolled 340 students. Gradually, the members of staff and students of Dnipro State Medical Academy came back from the war from the different areas of the USSR. Thousands of graduates of the Dnipro State Medical Academy and more than 200 of its staff during the war years were awarded orders and medals. Many of them sacrificed their lives for their homeland.

    On 6 April 1965, Dnipro State Medical Academy opened the morphological building with seven departments, museums, and scientific and educational laboratories. In 1966 the Dnipro State Medical Academy celebrated its 50 anniversary. By that time, the Dnipro State Medical Academy had 55 departments and 3769 students were enrolled in the different departments of the Academy. Among the staff of the Dnipro State Medical Academy were 31 professors, 88 associate professors, 216 assistant professors, 43 doctors of medical science, and 198 candidates of medical sciences. Dnipro State Medical Academy was awarded the Order of Red Banner of Labor by the House of the President of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR for its development in medical science and its 50th anniversary in 1966.

    After the restoration of educational and therapeutic bases, Dnipro State Medical Academy started expanding the range of specialties: improving the quality of teachers, organizing the Dental School, opening a new department, and creating a central research laboratory. Academy built 5 hostels, 3 dining rooms, a dispensary, and a sports camp and started operating them. In 1970 came into operation a sports complex with a swimming pool. In 1973 Dnipro State Medical Academy created a faculty for training physicians, and in 1974 opened a preparatory department. In 1984 – commissioned educational building number 3, which housed 9 Departments and 4 lecture halls. In the 80-90 years of the last century based on the Dnipro State Medical Academy created a faculty of foreign students, opened a medical Lyceum, organized psychophysiological laboratory testing, and greatly expanded its academic and clinical base.

    Throughout its history, the Dnipro State Medical Academy has trained about 45,000 doctors.

    University Today

    Today Dnipro State Medical Academy is one of the leading universities of medical education in Ukraine from a single continuous professional training at three levels: pre-university, graduate, and postgraduate. In the structure of the university – 6 faculties (three medical, dental, department of foreign students, and faculty of postgraduate education), have more than 4,5 thousand students and doctors for postgraduation. At the Academy 59 departments work. Among staff at Dnipro State Medical Academy, there are 646 teachers, among them 98 doctors of Medical Sciences and 359 candidates of Medical Sciences. In total, the Academy employs over 1100 employees.

    Among the teachers: 1 – Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, 1 corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 2, Corresponding Members of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, 4 employees were awarded prizes of the President of Ukraine, 5 distinguished workers in higher education and public education, 9 Honoured Scientists of Science and Technology, 9 State Prize winners of Ukraine and Russia, 5 Honored doctors of Ukraine, 24 full members and corresponding members of many national and foreign academies, members of international scientific societies and associations.

    Dnipro State Medical Academy has 42 clinical departments located in 28 hospitals and has over 15 thousand beds. On a clinical basis, the university organized 29 specialized centers. The Dnipro State Medical Academy occupies an area of 85 hectares. It has 8 academic buildings with a total area of 52000 square meters, which are located in 608 classrooms, offices, and laboratories. 7 dormitories area is 46000 sq.m. and accommodates 2849 students and resident doctors under training. The Dnipro State Medical Academy has a sports complex, vivarium, sanatorium, sports camp, academic library, Technocenter, and two museums.

    Accommodation

    Dnipro State Medical Academy provides guaranteed accommodation placement services to all foreign students who receive an academic offer. There are several accommodation options for the students and it is important to consider whether they prefer an independent lifestyle or enjoy living in a student community. The academy provides accommodation for students in the hostels. In total DSMA has 7 comfortable hostels located in different regions of the city connected by advanced transport structures (bus, tramway, and trolley bus). The hostels have a total area of 45422 sq. m. and accommodate 2768 students. Foreign students live in hostels No. 1, 5, and 7.
    The hostel buildings are of a modern block type and consist of rooms for 2-3 students with all the necessary conveniences. All rooms are well-organized and furnished with a bed, a desk, and a chair, provided with cold and hot running water, central heating, Internet access, and suitable lighting for both study and relaxation. The territory of the hostels is protected and patrolled by officers of guard service. In the hostel, each room is attached to the kitchen suitable for students to cook food to their taste. Students need to supply their kitchen utensils. There are several students’ canteens and cafes on the territory of the academy. Living in a hostel combines the convenience of living near academic buildings, the access to programs and services that help international students develop academically, the opportunity to build lasting friendship relations, and comfortable, affordable living. Off-campus accommodation can be obtained in the nearby apartments. Available apartments and houses are furnished and vary in size, number of conveniences, and cost.
