    Odesa National Medical University was established in 1900. The university is a member of the European Universities Union and is the biggest Medical University in the Ukraine. The university has 800 lecturers, 18 academicians, 105 professors and doctors, 407 assistant doctors and assistant professors. In 2007, Odesa National Medical University was positioned at 107 place in the World’s Universities List. It has more than 4500 students, over 1500 of them are foreign students from 57 different countries. The courses include equipment with state-of-the-art modern medical technologies. The campus was built on a 27.000 sq. m. field and consists of 18 blocks, 48 clinics, 6 dormitories, a library with about 1 million books, a publishing department, a computer center, a sports center, and a modern guest house on the coast of the Black Sea.

    History

    1 September 1900, a significant event that left its mark in the history of medical education in Ukraine and for many years identified her perspective, was the opening of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Novorossiysk. Faculty had bright prospects because of the numerous great world-renowned scientists worked in it. Before the opening of the department was completed, major buildings and clinics were constructed with the latest construction and architecture. Admittedly it was the most prestigious faculty and medical establishment of the time.

    The good start was suspended because of Russia’s war with Japan, the revolutionary events of 1905-1907 years, the First World War of 1914-1918 years, the October Revolution of 1917, and the Civil War. After the elapsed time and the destruction of the old system of higher education, new foundations began to make their ascent. The positive things that were founded in the pre-revolutionary times soon began to bear fruit. 1922 Medical Faculty University of Novorossiysk was reformed as an independent institution of higher education – Medical Institute, again turned into a leading university of the south. 

    In the 20 years of the previous century, basic schools were actively formed bringing the Odesa Medical Institute worldwide fame. Among them, the Odesa therapeutic school-based students S.P. Botkin – professors S.V.Levashovym, P.O.Valterom and their successors were L.P.Dmytrenko, M.D. Strazhesko, F.H. Yanovski, N.A.Yasinovka. One of the founders of the Odesa Ophthalmic School was Professor S.S.Holovin. Continuing its development and worldwide fame associated with the name of academician V.P.Filatova. 

    Even in pre-revolutionary times emerging world-renowned school of pathologists, whose founder was the first dean of the Medical Faculty V.V.Pidvysotskyy. His closest aides and students were OO Bogomolets and Zabolotny, who later headed the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. At the same time formed a large scientific school scholar – V.V.Voronina pathologist. His ideas formed the future prominent scientists V.P.Filatov, L.P.Dmytrenko, SI Vinokurov, L.O.Cherkes, M.O.Yasynovskyy, V.K.Zhhenti, et al. Not to mention known morphologists – professors M.K.Lysonkova, M.S.Kondrat Prokofiev, F.A.Volynskoho, V.I.Bushkovycha, et al. Their original work has received recognition worldwide.

    University Today

    Today, the Odesa National Medical University maintains its esteemed reputation as one of Ukraine’s leading medical institutions. As a proud member of the International Association of Medical Universities, its commitment to excellence in training is widely acknowledged across Europe and America. With 58 faculties, the university boasts a vibrant student body of over 6,000, including a diverse array of international students from various countries. Instruction is delivered in Ukrainian and English languages, ensuring accessibility and fostering a rich multicultural learning environment.

    International Faculty

    In 1946 the first foreign student–citizen of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea Kim Jang Soo was admitted to Odesa National Medical Institute. In general, the history of education of foreign people in the Odesa National Medical University has three stages. The first – from 1946 to 1961 – the training of doctors for the people’s democracy. The second – from 1961 to 1991 – the training of medical personnel mainly in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and the third – from 1991 to now. The last period of training is on a contract basis for all interested foreigners, including citizens of the CIS. 

    The first stage of training was carried out based on intergovernmental agreements, the second – on the basis of intergovernmental, inter-party coordination and communication between NGOs and trade unions, the third stage is associated with the collapse of the USSR and the CIS’s inability to perform the former arrangement. At the initial stage, not numerous students from European countries hardly changed the organizational structure of the educational process. Foreign students entered into existing groups and studied together with Soviet students. The emergence of students from Asia, Africa, and Latin America resulted in significant changes in the education of foreign students at the Odesa National Medical University, so in 1964 has been created the dean dedicated to working with foreign students, and later the Department of Russian Language (1969).

    In 1979 the position of vise-rector for international relations was introduced. In 1990 the faculty prepared graduates from foreign nationals for internship, master’s, postgraduate, and doctoral studies. This year started training courses for foreign citizens. In 1992 the preparatory department for foreign citizens, where students are trained in Russian and Ukrainian language, improved basic training in physics, chemistry, and biology has been created. After passing the final exams students receive a state certificate and can be credited to the first course chosen specialty Odesa National Medical University or other institution of higher education in Ukraine.

    Since 1996 the Odesa National Medical University opened training for doctors in English and later French study. Foreign students acquire knowledge and skills of the newest medical technologies: endoscopic, laparoscopic, maxillofacial, plastic surgery, transplantation, tissue therapy, implant dentistry, and others. The priority task of the university at the present stage is to expand direct contacts with foreign countries based on mutual agreements aimed at further integration into European and global health structures to learn best practices in medical education and scientific research development. Since 1946 the faculty received training from over 7,000 foreign citizens from 58 countries worldwide. Many graduates have become leading specialists, heads of medical institutions, regional services, and educational institutions.

    At present time at the Odesa National Medical University, more than 1000 foreign students have the opportunity to use high-quality and modern information services, a new student library, and study books that are written by professors of the University and published in Odesa National Medical University. Continuing the tradition of educational work with foreign students Odesa National Medical University operates a comprehensive approach to learning and international education fully developed personality to create a friendly atmosphere, good conditions for learning, and a comprehensive and mutually enriching review of our countries, their history, and culture.

    Courses

    • Medicine. The course in Medicine is of 6 years duration and is conducted in English / Ukrainian medium.
    • Dentistry. The course in Dentistry is conducted in English / Ukrainian medium. The course duration is 5 years.
    • Pharmacy, industrial pharmacy. The course in Pharmacy is of 5 years duration and is conducted in English / Ukrainian medium.
    • Pre-study (language) course. Those students who choose to study the course in Ukrainian medium shall undergo a Preparatory course (Ukrainian language course) of one year duration. 
    • Health care and pharmaceutical business management. The Master’s course duration is 1,5 years and is conducted in Ukrainian medium.

    The academic session of courses commences on the 1st of September. For new students of I year, the last date to join classes is the 15th of November.

    Post Graduate Courses

    The Odesa National Medical University is conducting postgraduate courses in 91 specializations. Presently ONMedU is the only university in Ukraine with postgraduate courses in different fields of medical science in English medium. Admissions to the courses are open around the year on the availability of seats. PG courses are clinical training programs conducted in hospitals and clinics under the supervision of a guide (teacher). By the end of the PG course, the candidate has to write a thesis on a particular topic, which is chosen by the candidate with the help of his/her teacher.

    There are the following post-graduate courses:

    • Short-term Advanced Certificate Course. The duration of the course is from 3 months up to 12 months. These courses are conducted in Ukrainian and English medium in various specializations on specific topics/techniques.
    • Senior Residency. The duration of the course is 3 years and is conducted in Ukrainian and English medium.
    • PG courses in Dentistry (MDS). The duration of the course is 2-3 years and is conducted in Ukrainian and English medium. 

    The university is conducting PG courses in English medium in the following specializations of dentistry:

    • Orthopedic Stomatology (Prosthodontics);
    • Orthodontics;
    • Pediatric Stomatology (Dentistry);
    • Stomatology;
    • Surgical Stomatology / Oral Surgery;
    • Therapeutic Stomatology / Conservative Dentistry.

    Accommodation 

    Odesa National Medical University has six hostels. Hostels are provided with free 24 hrs. gas, electricity, hot & cold water and phone. Rooms are centrally heated. Furniture and bedding in rooms is provided by the hostel. Reading rooms and gym are also available in every hostel. Hostels are provided with full security. There is also a Student Cafeteria. Hostels are surrounded by green belt with outdoor sport activities like basketball, volleyball, football, etc.

    Sports-Health Complex


    The university has good conditions not only for study but also for sports and recreation. There is a sport-health complex on the Black Sea shore, where over 500 students at a time can rest in summer.

    The university’s Sports Complex is situated on the territory of the campus. It has six sports halls; for various games, including wrestling, table tennis, athletics, aerobics, badminton, rhythmic gymnastics, training room (gym). At the university the students can participate in more than 16 kinds of sports. The most popular are athletics, basketball, handball, tennis, weight lifting, swimming, football, fencing, mini-football, judo, unarmed combat, chess, badminton and other.

    The students who are interested in the creation art can attend the students’ centre “VITA”. The most popular are ballet dancing, modern and folk-dancing, Students Theater of popular miniatures, poetic studio and students press-club.
