    Uzhhorod National University is one of the leading universities in Ukraine, located in the picturesque city of Uzhhorod in the Zakarpattia region, near the borders of Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania. As one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions in western Ukraine, Uzhhorod National University is renowned for its academic excellence, diverse programs, and strong emphasis on research and international cooperation.

    History

    Uzhhorod National University was established in 1945 to serve as an academic and research center in the westernmost region of Ukraine. The Botanic Gardens was founded in the university in 1946. More than 500 species of trees and bushes and about 450 subtropical and tropical cultures are growing in it now.

    By 1 July 1946 the University had embodied (included) 15 departments with 42 lecturers working there. In 1951 the first graduation of specialists took place and next year the first graduation of doctors took place in the medical faculty. Post-graduation courses in Uzhhorod State University were founded in 1953. In 1974 the construction of the main academic building of the university began.

    In 1993 by the decision of the Interdisciplinary Accreditation Commission and the Collegium of the Ministry for Education of Ukraine the University was awarded the full fourth level of accreditation, with autonomy in solving of many issues of the university life. In 2000
    for a significant contribution to the development of national education and science the University was conferred national status and renamed Uzhhorod National University with the fourth level of accreditation by the Decree of the President of Ukraine. 

    At the end of 2024, 11,722 full-time students and 3,374 part-time and evening students were enrolled at Uzhhorod National University and College of Natural Sciences and Humanities.

    University Today

    Uzhhorod National University offers full-time and part-time study, and specialists are trained at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels. The Uzhhorod National University has 19, 2 educational and research institutes (Educational and Research Institute of Chemistry and Ecology, Ukrainian-Hungarian Educational and Research Institute), the Department of Military Training, Natural Sciences and Humanities College, which trains specialists in related specialities of the university.

    Uzhhorod National University is among the best higher education institutions in Ukraine in terms of educational, scientific, international, innovative and informational activities and is ranked 12th in the Webometrics Ranking of World’s Universities, has been included in the World University Rankings 2025 for the second time and is among the 17 best universities in Ukraine. And according to the consolidated rating for 2024 from the national educational information resource ‘Osvita.ua’ – among more than 200 domestic universities included in the sample, Uzhhorod National University took 11th place.

    The university unites 1198 academic staff, including 185 doctors of sciences, professors and 693 candidates of sciences, doctors of philosophy. There are 175 part-time employees, including 32 Doctors of Sciences, Professors and 72 Candidates of Sciences, Doctors of Philosophy. The share of doctors of sciences, professors is 15.8%, candidates of sciences, doctors of philosophy – 55.6%.

    The university has an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 2 corresponding members of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 4 academicians of the Academy of Sciences of the Higher School of Ukraine, 11 Honoured workers of science and technology of Ukraine, 10 Honoured educators of Ukraine, 7 Honoured lawyers of Ukraine, 11 Honoured doctors of Ukraine, 4 Honoured inventors of Ukraine, and an Honoured journalist of Ukraine.

    The university is a participant in programs like Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe, which enable academic exchanges, joint research projects, and the sharing of best practices. UzhNU has partnerships with universities and institutions in countries such as Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Germany, and the Czech Republic.

    Medical Faculty

    The Faculty of Medicine is the largest faculty within the structure of Uzhhorod National University. It offers professional training in the field of healthcare in specialties such as Medicine, Pharmacy, and Nursing. The faculty’s academic strength includes more than forty Doctors of Medical Sciences and over one hundred Candidates of Sciences.

    The faculty’s educational base consists of the main theoretical building, multiple departments of regional, municipal, and departmental clinical hospitals, four polyclinics, and six dispensaries. For clinical medical training, students undergo internships at multidisciplinary district hospitals throughout Zakarpattia region. Pharmacy students complete their practical training at local pharmacies and at the pharmaceutical plant of the “Arterium” corporation in Lviv.

    Currently, more than 1,000 students study at the faculty. The educational process is supported by highly qualified researchers and practicing doctors, including 36 Doctors of Sciences and Professors; 85 Candidates of Sciences and Associate Professors; 2 laureates of the State Prize of Ukraine; 4 academicians of public academies of sciences; 7 Honored Doctors of Ukraine; 1 Honored Worker in Education, Science, and Technology of Ukraine; 1 Honored Educator of Ukraine; 2 Honored Inventors of Ukraine; and 7 members of academic councils for the defense of PhD and doctoral dissertations. Students at the faculty come from various regions of Ukraine as well as from abroad.

    The faculty continues to expand its international relations. In recent years, guest lectures for medical students have been delivered by professors from Austria, Germany, France, the United States, and Hungary. Faculty members have undergone academic and pedagogical internships in Japan, the Netherlands, the USA, and Scotland. Similarly, students have participated in training and internships in the USA, Greece, Yugoslavia, Hungary, and Slovakia.

    Faculty of Dentistry

    Over the years, the Faculty of Dentistry at Uzhhorod National University has earned recognition not only in Ukraine but also internationally, becoming a well-known academic and scientific center. The core of the Faculty consists of six departments, five of which are responsible for undergraduate education, and one for postgraduate training. These departments serve over 1,000 students, interns, postgraduate students, and trainees.

    At the postgraduate education department, dental professionals can participate in continuous professional development programs such as specialization courses, pre-certification training, thematic improvement cycles, and internships in the following areas: Therapeutic Dentistry, Orthopedic Dentistry, Surgical Dentistry, Pediatric Dentistry, and Orthodontics.

    One of the faculty’s key focus areas is international cooperation. The faculty has established scientific and production partnerships with leading international medical institutions, including PETRAMED P.Z.V. and Univerzitná dentálna klinika prof. Kostenka in the Slovak Republic.

    Faculty members are active participants in both international and national professional associations such as IOFOS (International Organization of Forensic Odonto-Stomatology, Italy), Osteuropa Verein Rechtsmedizin (Germany), the Ukrainian Dental Association, the Association of Prosthodontists and Dental Technicians of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Association of Forensic Dentists, the Association of Periodontists of Ukraine, the Association of Preventive and Pediatric Dentistry, the Ukrainian Association of Maxillofacial Surgeons and Dental Surgeons, the Association of Orthodontists of Ukraine, and the Association of Dental Students.

    The main clinical training base for students is the University Dental Clinic, where young professionals gain hands-on experience working with high-quality dental equipment. They treat patients under the guidance of experienced and highly qualified dental practitioners, applying the full scientific and medical expertise of the faculty.
