    University History

The Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts was founded in 1968 under the name “Kyiv State Institute of Culture” according to the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR. In 1972, the Kyiv State Institute of Culture was named after O. Ye. Korniychuk, a name the institution carried until 1992. During the Soviet years, the institute was headed by O. S. Sokalsky, I. V. Bohan, and G. D. Tsybuliak. The institute consisted of faculties of cultural and educational work and library science, as well as faculties of cultural and educational work in the cities of Mykolaiv and Rivne. The institute had 12 departments. In February 2020, the institution was transferred from the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture to the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education and Science.

On April 21, 1993, M.M. Poplavsky, a graduate of KDIC and a Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, became its rector. He was the youngest rector in Ukraine at that time. The first 10 years of M. Poplavsky’s rectorship are marked by the rapid development of the Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts, structural reorganization, significant growth in the number of doctoral and candidate degrees, and the opening of 12 new faculties. The establishment of the university became the life’s work of M.M. Poplavsky, who strives not only to keep up with the times but to significantly surpass them. Since M.M. Poplavsky became the rector of the Kyiv University of Culture and Arts, radical reforms have begun in the training system for the socio-cultural sphere. In June 1996, the Kyiv State Institute of Culture was accredited with the highest level – IV. In 2021, M. Poplavsky was re-elected as the president of the Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts.
