O.M.Beketov National University of Urban Economy in Kharkiv is a Ukrainian university, named after Olexiy N. Beketov and specializing in urban development studies. The educational institution was founded in 1922 as the All-Ukrainian College of Municipal Services and started training international students in the middle 50s of the last century. The first foreign graduates who studied at the Urban Planning Faculty and got their degrees were citizens of the People’s Republic of Poland and the Socialist Republic of Romania. During the following years, the number of foreign students constantly increased and by the end of the 70s, it was over 100 people. Therefore the Ministry of Higher and Specialized Secondary Education of the USSR created the Foreign Students Department. By that time foreign students were educated at 3 faculties – Urban Development, Electric Power Supply and Lighting of Cities, and Urban Electric Transport.
Former Names
In 1938 the Kharkiv Institute of Public Utilities was renamed into Kharkiv Institute of Public Construction, and in 1939 – into the Kharkiv Institute of Municipal Construction Engineers. In 1941, the Kharkiv Training School of Public Utilities was liquidated, and the Kharkiv Institute of Municipal Construction Engineers and the College of Sustainable Construction were separated into separate educational institutions. In 1989 Kharkiv Institute of Municipal Construction Engineers was renamed Kharkiv Institute of Municipal Engineers, 1994 – into Kharkiv State Academy of Urban Economy. In 2003, the academy received the status of a national one. On July 19, 2008, the academy signed the Budapest Open Access Initiative and became its 436th member organization. In 2013 the Kharkiv State Academy of Urban Economy was renamed into O.M. Beketov Kharkiv State University of Urban Economy.
University Today
Full-time education at the O.M. Beketov Kharkiv State University of Urban Economy trains specialists for foreign countries at 6 faculties in 3 qualification levels – Bachelor, Master, and Doctor of Ph.D. Today over than 3,000 specialists from 80 countries have graduated from the university. Many of them have achieved excellent academic results. The Kharkiv National University of Urban Economy maintains close partnership relations in the field of science and education with leading universities and research centers in the Russian Federation, the United States of America, the German Federal Republic, the United Kingdom of Great Britain, the Republic of Austria, the Kingdom of Sweden, the French Republic, the Kingdom of Spain, the Republic of Finland, the Republic of Turkey, the Republic of Estonia, the People’s Republic of China. The university maintains close academic and business relations with engineering associations in many countries. It is a member of the International Association of Universities under the aegis of UNESCO. The O.M. Beketov Kharkiv State University of Urban Economy has 6 academic buildings, education and research laboratories, a library with holdings of 882,000 books, a campus with 6 student hostels, an indoor sports facility with track and field gymnastics, bodybuilding, boxing, oriental martial arts facilities, and gyms.
