    Lviv National Medical University History

Lviv National Medical University named after Danylo Halytskyi holds a special place in Ukraine as one of the oldest and largest institutions for higher medical education. Its roots can be traced back to November 16, 1784, when the medical faculty of Lviv University was established under the patronage of Emperor Joseph II of Austria. Annually on this day, the Academic Council organizes a formal gathering where esteemed professors deliver speeches and honorary degrees are awarded. It’s an important occasion to reflect on the university’s accomplishments and celebrate its progress.

The history of Lviv National Medical University goes even further back, to January 20, 1661, when Lviv Jesuit College was transformed into an academy with faculties of theology, law, philosophy, and medicine. Emperor Joseph II of Austria played a significant role in reviving Lviv University, signing a patent on October 21, 1784, for its reestablishment with four faculties. This paved the way for the initiation of medical education, and on November 16, 1784, the first inaugural lecture in medicine was delivered, marking the official beginning of Lviv National Medical University.

Another noteworthy event in the history of the university occurred on November 8, 1853, when Emperor Franz Joseph I issued a patent to establish a pharmaceutical department under the Philosophy Faculty. The pharmaceutical department was later dissolved in 1925, and in 1930 and was reestablished as part of the Faculty of Medicine. In 1939, due to territorial shifts, the Medical Faculty was separated from Lviv University and transformed into Lviv State Medical Institute, which comprised two faculties – medical and pharmaceutical.
