    University’s History

The aspiration to establish a university in Dnipro, later Katerynoslav, was voiced in the late 18th century through a royal decree and materialized in 1918. Persistent efforts by local intelligentsia and support from scientists like Volodymyr Vernadskyi and Lev Pysarzhevskyi led to the Skoropadskyi government inaugurating Katerynoslav University with faculties in historical and philological studies, law, medicine, and physico-mathematics. In 1918, the university enrolled 2,750 students for its inaugural academic year, housed in the former building of the First Real School, based on the 1916 Higher Women’s Courses.

Following its establishment, Katerynoslav University became a prominent center for higher education in Ukraine. The university, with the support of notable Ukrainian scientists, opened with four faculties: historical and philological, legal, medical, and physico-mathematical. By the 1918/1919 academic year, it had enrolled 2,750 students. Despite enduring significant losses during the German-Soviet war, the university underwent rapid development post-war. In 1951, it opened the Faculty of Physics and Technology, focusing on rocket engineering. Under the leadership of Academician V. I. Mossakovskii from 1964 to 1986, the university expanded its research and educational activities, becoming a leading institution in Ukraine and the former USSR. Throughout its history, the Oles Honchar Dnipro National University has been recognized for its scientific contributions and academic excellence, maintaining its status as a prestigious educational establishment.
