VNMU – the Best University in Vinnytsia According to SCImago IR International Ranking

The Ministry of Science and Education of Ukraine has published the results of the SCImago Institutions Rankings 2025 (SCImago IR). This ranking includes nearly 10,000 scientific and educational institutions worldwide, including 5,000 universities. This year, Ukraine is represented by 61 universities from most regions.

The SCImago Institutions Rankings, a reputable international evaluation system for scientific and academic institutions, has been analyzing their performance since 2009 based on three key criteria:

    • Research performance – 50%
    • Innovative developments – 30%
    • Social impact – 20%

The ranking methodology is based on data from the Scopus scientometric database and other authoritative sources. The assessment considers the impact of scientific publications, the level of international cooperation, open access to research, patent activity, technological contributions, and the digital presence of the university.

Since 2024, the ranking methodology has been expanded to include three new indicators reflecting the social impact of higher education institutions:

    • Research and educational initiatives aimed at global development and addressing current challenges.
    • The level of women’s participation in research processes.
    • The use of scientific research results in decision-making at national and international levels.

Universities in Vinnytsia in the SCImago IR 2025 ranking are ranked as follows:

    1. Vinnytsia National Pirogov Memorial Medical University40th place among Ukrainian universities.
    2. Vinnytsia National Technical University48th place.
    3. Vasyl’ Stus Donetsk National University57th place.

In the near future, the university will focus on achieving leading positions in pan-European rankings.

The Electronic System for Ranking Distribution in the Internship has Started Working

The electronic system for ranking distribution will automate the distribution of master’s graduates in medical and pharmaceutical specialties for an internship, making it completely transparent. In addition, thanks to the system, there will be electronic support for the entire internship training process, from admission to completion and issuing a certificate for a specialist doctor and pharmacist.

The system will collect and analyze the performance of graduates of higher education institutions, conduct automated ranking distribution for the internship, collect and store data about interns undergoing internship training, and generate electronic documents related to the process.

The system excludes the possibility of external interference in the ranking distribution process for the internship and its influence on its results. Furthermore, it is integrated with the unified vacancy portal for healthcare institutions so that interns will undergo the practical part of their training in positions needed by healthcare institutions.

This year, the internship distribution will occur among all graduates of higher medical and pharmaceutical education institutions, with the automated ranking score calculation. For the first time, a medical graduate can choose their preferred place by specialty from all available positions for the state distribution throughout the country.

Higher education institutions will register in the system and enter data about the graduate and their performance. Some of the information will be obtained from the Unified State Electronic Database on Education. After that, the graduate will register in the system, check their educational data, and calculate the ranking automatically. After calculating and forming the ranking, the graduate can submit up to five applications for distribution.

The ranking score will be formed from four indicators: KROK-1 or KROK B (20% of the score), KROK-2 (40%), OSCE (20%), and the average score of the graduate for all years of study (20%). The calculation will be done with an accuracy of 0.00001.

The first distribution in the system will take place on March 17, 2025, for graduates of the specialty “Medical Diagnostics and Treatment Technologies,” who are participating in the distribution for the internship in the specialty “Laboratory Diagnostics, Virology, Microbiology.” Graduates of the specialty from four universities will participate in this distribution: Zaporizhzhya State Medical and Pharmaceutical University, Kharkiv National Medical University, Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University, and O. O. Bohomolets National Medical University.

The places for internship training in this specialty, which will be available for selection during the distribution in March, have been provided by:

    • For the educational part – 10 higher education institutions under the Ministry of Health;

    • For the practical part – 102 healthcare institutions, including clinical hospitals and disease control and prevention centers.

The main distribution will take place in June-July. Over 5,000 graduates will participate in it, majoring in “Medicine,” “Pediatrics,” and “Medical Psychology.” If there are available spots, graduates in the specialties of “Dentistry” and “Pharmacy” will also be able to participate. It is expected that the number of vacant positions provided by higher education institutions (in the system) and healthcare institutions (on the vacancy portal) will be much more significant.

The system was created on the Diya. Engine Platform, with the support of the Swiss-Ukrainian EGAP Program, and was implemented by the Eastern Europe Foundation.

The system will be available to master’s graduates in specialties such as “Dentistry,” “Medicine,” “Medical Diagnostics and Treatment Technologies,” “Medical Psychology,” “Pharmacy,” and “Pediatrics” in the field of “Healthcare and Social Security,” who are participating in the internship distribution; doctor-interns and pharmacist-interns; representatives of healthcare and higher education institutions; representatives of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the National Health Service of Ukraine; representatives of departments (ministries) of healthcare of state (military) administrations; representatives of other state bodies, NAS of Ukraine, NAMSU, which manage healthcare institutions.

TNMU Pharmacy Students Explored the Laboratory Complex of the Ternopil Research Forensic Science Center

From March 7 to 13, 2025, 5th-year students of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Ternopil National Medical University had the opportunity to visit the state-of-the-art laboratory complex at the Ternopil Research Forensic Science Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine as part of their elective course “Industrial Practice in Pharmaceutical Chemistry”. This modern facility was officially opened in December 2024.

    Structure of the Laboratory Complex

The complex consists of two central departments:

    • The Biological Research and Records Sector
    • The Department of Material, Substance, and Product Research

Specialists from the Department of Material, Substance, and Product Research introduced students and faculty members to forensic examination methods and expert research conducted in their division.

They explained the specifics of analyzing various substances to determine their group classification or origin, using advanced techniques such as:

    • Qualitative chemical reactions
    • Thin-layer chromatography (TLC)
    • Gas chromatography (GC) with flame ionization and mass-selective detectors

Students learned about the cutting-edge analytical equipment available in the laboratory, including chromato-mass spectrometry complexes and gas chromatographs, which enable rapid forensic analysis and the detection of even trace amounts of narcotic substances. Experts noted that forensic examinations of narcotic drugs account for the majority of cases, with 160–200 studies conducted annually, a figure increasing by 10-15% each year. The laboratory’s X-ray fluorescence spectrometer has significantly expanded the range of materials analyzed.

    Insights from the Laboratory Head

The head of the laboratory complex, Vasyl Myronovych, provided an overview of the history and development of forensic laboratory research. He explained that new employees receive a 5th qualification level upon starting, which is determined by their specialization, including pharmacy graduates.

DNA Laboratory and Biological Research Sector

Forensic expert I. Milyan presented the Biological Research and Records Sector, highlighting the significance of molecular-genetic laboratories within the Expert Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA). These laboratories play a crucial role in identifying deceased military personnel and civilians affected by Russia’s military aggression.

The DNA laboratory, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, accelerates the identification process for biological materials found at crime scenes, significantly aiding criminal investigations and the identification of missing persons. The lab can process up to 100 biological samples daily, extract DNA profiles, and match them with those of relatives within 24 hours.

The Biological Research and Records Sector also collaborates with law enforcement agencies across Ukraine on criminal investigations, including cases of:

    • Sexual assaults
    • Thefts
    • Homicides
    • Kidnappings
    • Physical assaults

This visit provided TNMU pharmacy students with valuable insights into real-world forensic research, emphasizing the role of pharmaceutical chemistry in criminal investigations and forensic toxicology.

    Ukrainian National Anthem Day

Today, as Ukraine fights for its independence, the National Anthem holds special significance. It reminds us of the heroic struggle of our predecessors, supports our fighting spirit, and inspires new achievements for the present and future of our country.

The National Anthem of Ukraine is a symbol of our nation's struggle and courage:

"We’ll lay down our souls and bodies to attain our freedom,

And we’ll show that we, brothers, are of the Cossack nation."

The anthem unites us across thousands of kilometers. No matter where we are, the lines "Ukraine's glory and freedom have not yet perished..." remind us of home and how vital it is to fight for it.

May the words of the Anthem ring loudly from Starobilsk to Mukachevo, from Chernihiv to Sevastopol.

    Happy Ukrainian National Anthem Day!

ONMedU: practical training for higher medical education seekers

The internship for higher education seekers of Odesa National Medical University is an integral part of the training of specialists with higher education and the standards of higher education. It is aimed at consolidating the theoretical knowledge obtained by higher education seekers during their studies, acquiring and improving practical skills and abilities in the relevant specialty.

This academic year, after the end of the autumn semester, 3rd-year (nursing), 4th-year (industrial medical practice in hospitals of our city) and 5th-year (outpatient medical practice) students underwent internships. Such types of internships provide applicants with the opportunity to get acquainted with the different links of work of all medical institutions.

Practical training is carried out in two general stages – this is simulation training, where practical skills are practiced on simulators and the practical part directly when working with patients.

Regardless of the course of study and type of practice, its final stage is the higher education seeker’s passing of the clinical practical exam (CPE).

Training under the SimS project has begun at KhNMU

On the basis of the Simulation Center of Educational and Scientific Institute of Education Quality, KhNMU. 50 future doctors – applicants for higher medical education began training within the framework of the Erasmus+ project “Simulation Medicine and Scenario-Based Training in Emergency Medical Care” (SimS).

The classes are scheduled for 5 weeks and include passing briefing scenarios on the Open Labyrinth platform, practicing acquired practical skills in complex stimulating case scenarios, which were developed by project participants – scientific and pedagogical workers in the specialty “Emergency Medicine and Clinical Psychology” of 3 Ukrainian medical higher education institutions, including KhNMU.

Practice of acquired skills and competencies during thematic scenarios “First on the scene – emergency medical care” takes place in a specially equipped auditorium of the Simulation Center of KhNMU using equipment purchased with the financial support of the SimS project. An important element of the training is the demonstration of skills in providing psychological support to victims, as well as conducting resuscitation measures – both basic and according to an extended protocol using special equipment and medicine.

The possibility of undergoing practice before and after testing allows future doctors to track and evaluate acquired skills and competencies, and trainers to debrief the role of the project in the educational process.
